Minimizing Risks and Overcoming Challenges in Frenectomy Procedures

Abstract:

While most frenectomy procedures are uneventful, they still carry inherent risks. Effectively managing patients with tethered oral tissues requires a comprehensive evaluation and diagnostic process. A thorough understanding of oral anatomy, functional deficits, and surgical contraindications is essential for achieving optimal treatment outcomes. Quick identification and decisive management of potential complications can mean the difference between a minor concern and a critical event. This presentation will provide an overview of contraindications and complications in laser and surgical frenectomies, equipping clinicians with practical strategies to enhance safety, consistency, and patient outcomes.

Results: A comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, team approach and awareness of possible complications is necessary to provide our patients with the tools for a successful treatment outcome.

Discussion/Conclusion: A periodic self-evaluation of a clinician’s diagnostic and treatment techniques is necessary to be effective in avoiding complications and maximizing treatment outcomes. By keeping up with the latest research, collaborating with other specialists and learning from experience, laser practitioners can provide patients with the tools required to succeed.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this lecture, participants should be able to:

  1. Properly identify anatomical structures in the oral cavity.
  2. Recognize treatment contraindications for tongue-tie surgery.
  3. Describe acute and chronic post- surgical complications.
  4. Learn how to avoid and manage potential surgical complications.
