Maxillary Frenulum Dilemma: Current Classifications and Clinical Guidelines

In recent years, the maxillary frenulum (MF) has gained attention due to its supposed potential affect on breastfeeding; esthetic orthodontic issues (midline diasthema), and oral hygiene.

This presentation will focus on the clinical dilemmas regarding the release of the maxillary labial frenulum in pediatric patients, and the implications for breastfeeding and overall health in later life.

Clinical cases will be shown to demonstrate the morphologically dynamic and diverse structure of the MF.

Knowledge of normal morphology and its variations at every developmental stage, are essential for the correct differential diagnosis of abnormal MF cases that require intervention.

Current classifications of MF anomalies will be over viewed, and a clinical decision-making framework will be suggested to guide treatment, and associated management strategies.
