Tongue‑Tie Care in Japan Centered on Breastfeeding Support in Collaboration with IBCLCs – A Team‑Based Clinical Approach

Abstract:

This presentation explores the relationship between infant breastfeeding and tongue-tie (tongue‑tie and lip‑tie) in Japan. In our dental clinic, we have developed a model centered on collaboration with IBCLCs: incorporating breast care, feeding observations, and a joint support plan before and after release procedures to enhance breastfeeding success. We will report clinical outcomes for 171 tongue‑tie and lip‑tie release cases and demonstrate improvements in breastfeeding difficulties. Additionally, we will share practical insights from joint assessments conducted with IBCLCs, and discuss the establishment of the Nippon Pediatric Oral Development Society (NPD) in 2023, highlighting efforts to build an organizational framework that supports multidisciplinary collaboration.
